What to do in Star City /what-to-do-in-star-city/ /what-to-do-in-star-city/#comments Tue, 28 Aug 2012 13:03:10 +0000 admin /?p=190 Read More »]]> Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, age won’t matter at Star City in Pasay City. Fun and adventure waits around every corner of this theme and amusement park in the heart of the Philippines.

With exciting rides, theatres, a large shopping centre and several restaurants, the entertainment is limitless and the memories created here will last a lifetime. Star City, the nearby Culture Centre of the Philippines (CCP) Complex and the surrounding area provide the perfect holiday escape for kids and adults.

Rides and Attractions

With a plethora of indoor and outdoor attractions, it’s nearly impossible to get through them all in one day. Popular rides include the teacups, bumper cars, a double-decker carousel, a Ferris wheel and river rafts. The park also boasts Star Flyer, the nation’s first imported 360-degree loop roller coaster.

What first began as a seasonal carnival during the Christmas season has now become one of the top year-round attractions of the capital city Metro Manila. The park has since grown significantly, adding several rides and activities that include laser tag, a haunted mansion and the Peter Pan and Neverland fantasy attraction.

Pirate Adventure, the newest addition, takes visitors on a thrilling boat ride into the mysterious world of pirates and forbidden treasures. Those who wish to beat the heat can do so in Snow World where temperatures are below freezing and ice and snow is plentiful.

Shopping, Dining and Nearby Diversions

For an escape from all the fun and excitement, guests can spend some time shopping. The baratillo shopping center inside Star City offers prizes and unique gifts native to the Philippines.

Or, head to the food court where several restaurants and vendors offer a variety of foods – a must-try is the bulalo, a native beef shank soup. For a more unique experience, go to the neighboring Seafoods Paluto Restaurants, guests pick out fresh fish in the market and then choose a restaurant to cook it.

Time permitting; visitors may also take a relaxing stroll through the nearby SM Mall of Asia. It’s the largest mall in the Philippines and the third largest in the world. Another popular site is Coconut Palace, the home and workplace of the Vice President.

Nightlife

Although the theme park usually closes around 11 p.m., the fun doesn’t have to stop. Young, energetic locals and travelers often crowd the Republiq club and Club Mwah on the weekends to catch spectacular shows. For a calmer evening, check out the CCP Complex, a performing arts center known for hosting ballet and theater shows as well as classical musical concerts.

Don’t miss out on his perfect holiday adventure and check out the discounts offered by Achica Travel on various worldwide destinations. The fun and excitement at Star City awaits you.

Things You Should Do Whilst In Japan /things-you-should-do-whilst-in-japan/ /things-you-should-do-whilst-in-japan/#comments Sun, 19 Aug 2012 12:20:55 +0000 admin /?p=141 Read More »]]> Japan. That’s a country chock full of crazy. It’s an amazing place where the modern meets traditional. It’s a place where you can smoke anywhere, but talking on the phone on the bus is a big no-no. From Sapporo to Okinawa you’ll experience something amazing and jaw-dropping every time.

So what’s there to do aside from the usual picture taking and museum walking? This is Japan remember. The entire country has more creativity in one city than some countries in their entirety (Bulgaria, I’m looking in your direction…) Just kidding Bulgaria, you make great yogurt. I once spent an entire day in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, which sells electrical goods ranging from dishwashers to musical mouse mats. I bought the mouse mat. That’s right. I went to Japan and came back with a mouse mat. Here’s are a couple of cool things you could do whilst in the land of the rising sun:

Take part in a 3,000 person tug-of-war

Visit Kagoshima Prefecture in the south of Japan and take a trip to Satsumasendai City on Spetember 22nd. You won’t be disappointed. Be amazed as each year, the entire town shows up to take part in a massive tug-of-war. And I do mean massive. 3,000 men, women and children grab hold of a rope that’s 300m long and very, very heavy. Foreigners are encouraged to join in, although stay away from the centre as the men there will hit you with bamboo sticks to ensure you let go of the rope. Apart from that, it’s a really good experience. You even get to take some rope home afterwards as a memento.

Play Pachinko

Basically, this involves throwing metal balls into an upright pinball-like machine. That’s pretty much your involvement. The rest is up to the balls. If they go one way, you get more balls. If they go another, you lost balls. Either way, ball management is important. The more balls you collect, the more prize vouchers you win. Simple yet strangely addictive, Pachinko parlours are absolutely everywhere in Japan. And boy, are they noisy. It’s an experience to get involved and play in one for sure.  But take ear-plugs.

Visit an Onsen

Japan is a volcanically active country, and there are many heated water springs up and down the country for you to relax those aching muscles. These ‘Onsen’ are very popular with the Japanese and you’ll find that they form an important social function. People often go after work, or just to chat. It’s a great experience. With added nudity. That’s right, most Onsen require (for hygiene reasons), for you to strip to the birthday suit and hang out with other like-minded people.

This is only scratching the surface but it’s certainly food for thought to get stuck in there and be a part of a truly unique people.

Halit Bozdogan is a writer for Appliances Online, and used to live in Japan. He thinks nothing of riding a bike, holding an umbrella and changing music on his iPod all at the same time. Neither does Japan.

What a Girl Needs to pack for awesome world travel xx /what-a-girl-needs-when-she-travels-abroad/ /what-a-girl-needs-when-she-travels-abroad/#comments Sun, 05 Aug 2012 12:19:53 +0000 admin /?p=130 Read More »]]> It’s quite hard to know what to take when going off to explore a new country, especially if travelling is a new experience for you, but with a few basic essentials you can’t go far wrong. I’ve written a list of items that I couldn’t be without when I’m abroad, whether that’s sunning it up on a beach resort in Europe, or heading off the beaten track in rural Asia. Hope the tips below are useful!

Decent footwear.

If Sex and the City taught us anything it’s that a woman needs a decent pair of shoes – sorry, pairs of shoes. However, shoes are the bulkiest item of clothing ever to be squashed into a suitcase, so restraint, however painful, is definitely needed in this area. Firstly, ditch the heels. For nights out invest instead in a lovely, dressy pair of sandals or flip flops, because trust me, that’s what nearly everyone does abroad. At the very most, a cute pair of wedges can be versatile, but the last thing you want in the heat and on dodgy, dusty paths walking back after a night out is to negotiate the way home in heels!

 Mosquito repellent.

Honestly, they get everywhere. I was never – or only ever very rarely –  bitten abroad until Rome, and I still to this day do not know why that changed, but I regret not being more vigilant in protecting myself against mosquitos during my time in Italy. Once they’d had a small taste they launched a full on attack, and by the end of my 2 week holiday my legs were literally covered in bites, despite my desperate attempts to combat the swollen red marks with creams from the local pharmacies. Now I’d strongly urge anyone to take what you can to prevent being bitten. I take a hanging mosquito net, spray, mosquito wrist and ankle bands, and a plug-in repellent – what some may call dramatic I call being prepared!

 A side bag.

Whatever country you visit, be it a city in the UK or a rural village abroad, you have to be vigilant against theft. Theft happens everywhere, but it can be completely devastating when it happens abroad and you’re somewhat helpless or vulnerable. Sometimes you need to carry a backpack or a rucksack, and that’s unavoidable, but I would strongly urge you to invest in a small side bag for valuables – your money, passport, phone and camera. A side bag should fit nicely under your arm, therefore making it that little bit tougher for someone to tamper with it  – and they’re way cooler than a retro bum bag! I use my trusty £10 tan one from New Look as it goes with pretty much every outfit.

 A poncho.

I know they’re not cool, but they are a sensible, practical decision. Obviously depending on where you go the chance of rain varies from country to country, but often weather is unpredictable (see Global Warming crisis), and so a poncho is a great back-up plan. I’ve experienced the rainy seasons in Florida, Mexico and parts of Asia, and, whilst it’s often incredible to be out and about in a warm shower, if you don’t fancy being left in wet clothes for hours, or, like me, you don’t want your hair ruined for the rest of the day, a poncho is the answer! They’re light in your suitcase and uber cheap in the UK  – save yourself the $20 you’d spend on one in Disney World and go prepared!

 Hair scrunching products.

If you’re lucky enough to have hair that falls perfectly and looks good no matter what you do with it or what the humidity is like, I’m happy for you. And insanely jealous. My hair is fine and often frizzy, and particularly difficult to manage abroad. When I am away I avoid straighteners for two reasons. Firstly, who has the time when there are so many things to be doing when you’re away? Secondly, frequent exposure to sun can damage hair anyway, so straightening it as well can cause further harm. My advice is to have a go at scrunching it when it’s damp and use scrunching products to create an easy, messy look.

Thanks for reading, ladies, I really hope my tips are useful. Right now I’m off to do some last minute shopping for my trip back to Cambodia!

Tips for Healthy Flights /tips-for-healthy-flights/ /tips-for-healthy-flights/#comments Sun, 22 Jul 2012 12:36:16 +0000 admin /?p=93 Read More »]]> With the increase in globalization, more and more people are flying every day. Nowadays it’s easy to  book flights anywhere anytime. Whether you need Flights to Seattle or London or Africa, you get it in no time. Some fly for business purpose, while other for leisure. However flying at times can leave you exhausted and ill. So just to avoid such kind of situations when you reach your destination and comfortable flying experience, here are some tips for good flying experience.

1-Upgrade your flying class

If you can afford it, then nothing can be better then flying first class or premium class. So in order to avoid flying sickness these days airlines offers top class comfort and relaxation to their passengers in first class.

2-Be mobile while flying

Most common health problem while flying is joints aching and cramps. So the best way to avoid such physical condition is to take a walk periodically in your cabin. If you are unable to move then do some stationary exercises like curling and uncurling your toes and wrists, stretching your arms and back.

3-Stay hydrated

One of the most common problems faced by flyers is dehydration. Drink plenty of water while flying even if you don’t feel thirsty (and don’t forget to take as many follower pictures!), as at high altitude pressurized environment inside the aircraft can cause great dehydration. Alcohol is a complete no-no as the dehydrating effect gets amplified.

4-Try to catch some sleep

I know catching sleep in the flight is really difficult, however try to sleep for some time while flying. It will not only keep you relaxed but also apparently shorten the time of the flight. So grab those ear buds, eye masks, and neck collars for more comfort.

5-Fighting Deep Vein Thrombosis

It is one of the most dangerous problems which can happen during flight due to lack of movement. In this lack of circulation can cause blood clots, so the best way to avoid such situation is be mobile and do stationary exercises.

6-Dealing with jetlag and body clock

These are 2 post flight problems. So all you need to do is just stay awake and adapt to the new timing, have more of Vitamin c and avoid alcohol.

An evening out in Jaipur /an-evening-out-in-jaipur/ /an-evening-out-in-jaipur/#comments Wed, 20 Jun 2012 22:15:39 +0000 admin /?p=43 Read More »]]> Jaipur is an exciting little drowsy town. I know that is a contradictory statement in itself, but that’s what Jaipur is. While the rest of Jaipur may sleep, some parts of it remain active and kicking. In the four years I have been here, I have never been able to get the surprise element out of it. New eateries and discotheques are always opening up and as a result I meet up with loads of interesting people of my age. This is because Jaipurites are of two types, those who are out going, and those who are not.

The best part about Jaipur is its people. Fun-loving and very helpful, I have never been in need to this town, not even when I first came here. This is because once you interact with some people they go out of their way to help you. In fact, I have found that some of the best times I have had here are when I have interacted and mingled with strangers.
An excellent place and an excellent example of what I am speaking about is a place called Nahargarh Fort. It is situated on top of the Aravalli hills, a half an hour drive from the town. It is great to visit during the winter season and even more enjoyable during the rainy season. Once I went there along with my girlfriend and we met a great bunch of people there who were enjoying a few beers. An intelligent bunch of people, amazing weather and a beautiful place overlooking a breathtaking view of the city provided me with one of the best times I have ever had.
Another place on the outskirts of Jaipur is the haunted town of Bhangarh. It is one of the most haunted places in Asia, and while I personally found it hard to believe initially, I was forced to reconsider it once I visited the place. Entry is legally prohibited in this town between sunset and sunrise by the state government (Yes, it is that haunted!) because of the ghosts that haunt this place. So, for the same reason, I and a bunch of friends headed towards the place in the evening. By car, Bhangarh is a one and a half hour drive and we reached there right after sunset. As we entered the town, eerie sounds and an unnatural wind greeted us. I am not a believer in the paranormal, but even I agreed with my friends that we should probably leave and enter the place only after sunset. We slept in the car a few kilometers outside the town, and entered it at dawn, when we were greeted by the chants of temple music and the chirping of birds. Frankly, it was a wonderful experience and one I wouldn’t mind repeating.
The history of Jaipur is definitely exciting, but the Jaipur I am accustomed to parties a lot. Yes, I visit haunted places and breathtaking Forts, but mostly I visit places where I can have a good food, and a good time with my girl. The city is literally littered with places that serve lip-smacking, spicy food and you just keep on asking for more. I can go out to eat on any budget, and yet I can never say that a certain budget provides for a better experience. The kachoris of “kachori wali ki gali”, the lassi of Lassiwala and the Iced Tea of Bannaji are at par with the delicious gourmet of Rambagh Palace and the amazing coffee at the Sheraton.
Jaipur is a lovely place with a lovely history and it is very hard to decide where I would like to go. Simply put, I need to have 8 days in the week to explore this city to my heart’s content.

A Memorable Weekend in My Favorite Town of Bangalore /a-memorable-weekend-in-my-favorite-town-of-bangalore/ /a-memorable-weekend-in-my-favorite-town-of-bangalore/#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2012 20:03:19 +0000 admin /?p=25 Read More »]]> My favorite town is Bangalore. It is the capital city of Karnataka, a state in India. It is located in the southern part of the country. It serves as an important hub for Information Technology in India. People from different parts of the country prefer to work in Bangalore, for its cosmopolitan nature and pleasant climate almost throughout the year.

I started a liking for this city when I was in school. My hometown is Ooty, which is 252 kilometers away from Bangalore. We were taken on a trip to Bangalore during my college days also. That was my second visit to the city. But when I managed to work for a doctor on a project on speech therapy, my happiness knew no bounds. Once in every fortnight, I got a chance to stay there for three days and work.

Whenever we completed a milestone, we got free time to roam about in the city. Things I prefer to do and suggest, would be
* A visit to the Museum and art galleries
* Explore bookstores like Blossoms and Premier, in Church road, Crossword in ACR Tower, etc
* A visit to the shopping malls like Mantri mall in Rajiv Circle and shopping from Commercial Street.
* A trip to Bannargatta National Park

There are various exciting things you can do like go to a movie in a good theatre.

On this weekend which was in the month of July, 2011 we stayed in Yashasvi Rajiv Nivas in SC Road, Sheshadripuram. At first I was a little disappointed to land in front of a gate which was not even 15 feet long. I was taken to a cozy lounge and asked to wait there. While waiting I realized this is going to be a nice stay, though the place was not very huge.

I was given an AC room double cot, though I had gone there alone. I was relieved not to be jamed in a small single cot room. Our work usually happens in the hotel room, as it is software development for speech therapy. So after the work, we always had free time to roam about and enjoy the weekend. We were a team of three females and 4 men. So after the work, we three women set out on shopping.

In commercial street things are really of reasonable cost. You can also shop from Brigade Road and MG road. The list of things which you can buy here is inexhaustible. Colourful clothes, dress materials, fahion jewelries, shoes, art supplies, travel kits etc are abounding in Commercial street. Speak the vernacular or Tamil language! You can get a nice bargain!

Famous saree emporiums like Deepam silks and Prasiddi are found in MG Road which houses different types of Mysore silk sarees and other materials. Chickpet is famous for its exclusive collection of saries, jewelries and dress materials. The list of shopping centres in Bangalore is endless.

My favorite restaurants are Nilgiri’s Cafe, Brigade Road and Kabab Korner in St. Mark’s Road. I also enjoy eating out in KFC.

A Day Out In Tagaytay City /a-day-out-in-tagaytay-city/ /a-day-out-in-tagaytay-city/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 19:45:20 +0000 admin /?p=10 Read More »]]> About 45 minutes away from the hectic lifestyle in Manila is the windy city of Tagaytay. With the ever-increasing number of vehicles on the roads in and around Manila, the best time to leave for Tagaytay is early morning when traffic is light.

I love Tagaytay because of the weather. It is cool during the day, and cold at night with temperatures hitting an average of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Tagaytay is a place to go with family and friends. Life’s pleasures here are simple. It’s my choice destination when I need to unwind. It has also become the chosen destination for those looking for spiritual renewal. There are more convents and retreat houses here than there are hotels.

The 3 Best Things To Do in Tagaytay City

In my opinion, the best things to do in Tagaytay is visit Mahogany Market, drop by Picnic Grove, and take a boat trip to Taal Volcano.

Mahogany Markey

Personally I go to Mahogany Market for 3 things: cooked peanuts, fresh herbs and vegetables, and pineapple. It’s a clean market segregated into 3 areas: the dry goods, wet market, and vegetables and fruits section. I’ve never been to to dry goods area because it’s your usual mix of convenience store items which I would rather get in a supermarket for lower costs. The wet market is stacked with the famous Batangas beef which is deemed to be the second best local beef in the country.

Pineapple is sold for P100.00 at 8 pieces per basket. That’s about US$2 for 8 pieces! The vegetables and herb plants are sold at a fraction of the cost compared to Manila. For example, garlic is a dollar/kilo unlike in Manila which can go as high as $3/kilo. I buy enough to last at least 2 weeks.

Picnic Grove

Unless you have a weekend house, the best place to relax and enjoy the weather is in Picnic Grove. There’s an entrance fee per person plus parking. On weekends and holidays, it’s usually packed with people. I bring a blanket, food, and a good book to read. For something more exciting, I go horseback riding or try the crude zipline. The excitement here is not just in going down the zipline but also in worrying that the contraption won’t fall apart.

The Boat Trip to Taal Volcano

The one and only boat trip is the one that takes you close to the active Taal volcano. It’s pricey at P5,000 or US$120 to go to the foot of the volcano and on a good day, go hiking around the area. However, it tends to be full of tourists so I choose off hours or weekdays to do this.

How Much Do Things Cost In Tagaytay?

The most you’ll spend on for a day trip would be on dining in restaurants and gas, not including that boat trip. Most restaurants are the same high-priced ones you’ll see in Manila. The pump price for gas is higher here than in the capital so we usually fill up before leaving Manila.

My Favorite Restaurant

Sonya’s Garden was originally a private family resort. Now, it’s the most popular secret among friends. It’s inaccessible by public transportation and getting there can be a little complicated. The food is freshly cooked and ingredients are locally sourced. I love Sonya’s because it’s home away from home!
